Abstract

Physical pain, considering as bad or evil, is not only the issue of medical science, chiropractic, or neuropsychology but also the topic of humanities. It is the physical pain that constructs narratives in terms of society, religion, politics, metaphor, and gender. Therefore, pain would be understood and consumed even though overwhelming severe pain eludes language and its expression. The purpose of this essay will engage in searching for typology of consuming physical pain in the history of Christianity. The first type of consumption of physical pain has been named as voyeuristic type. For a longtime, others’pain and cruelty has been an attractive spectacle for the watchers. As same in Christianity, varieties of cruel and torturing scene have been provided with Christian watchers. Christian Paintings delineated the mutilated bodies whereas Christian writers described in detail the martyrs whose corpses were eaten by the beast in their sacred novel. The second type of consuming pain was in related to the creativity. The believers used pain both of others and of themselves in order to prove and develop their own belief. Crusading Christians slaughtered the infidels to prove their belief whereas ascetics used to obtain obscure pleasure by self-flagellation. In addition to, ascetics used to accumulate their authority by means of their mortification, that is, self-torturing practices. Finally, Christian world has consumed human pain for the sake of pastoral uses. For example, recent Christina has practiced chiropractic in the service for the sake of healing participants of worship service. Human pain becomes the object for pastoral care. In conclusion, the relationship between pain and belief has still at work in Christianity. Therefore, both pain of self and of others have to be the pivotal enterprise in theology.
