Abstract
Not only is physical pain the feeling from the system of nociception but also is from a complex phenomenological description. Pain unmakes self and identity of the victim. Nevertheless, pain is the overwhelming experience that eludes language. So to speak, feeling stemming from severe pain is ineffable. For this reason, pain and disease have been dealt with by magicians, priests, and sorceries in ancient world. Further, it has often been reduced to the moral and ethical territories. Thus, this study aims to present the understanding of pain and disease in the history of Christianity. First, pain and disease have been considered as the process of penance or punishment caused by sin. In other word, pain would be perhaps decisive instrument of God who intended to correct humans’ malady. All pain given in human life was given not only for punishment but also for correction to chastise the child who offended. At the same time, pain was sometimes known as a spiritual discipline to purified human soul stained by original sin. Thus, people have to seek out or endure intense physical pain in the name of religion. Secondly, Christians have understood that physical pain and disease were caused by evil spirit. People draw attention to the fact that, from the Synoptic tradition, there is exorcism stories legitimately associated with the historical Jesus. In Luke, Jesus “rebuked the fever and it left her.” This story inevitably draws people to understand that pain and disease are caused by the evil. Accordingly, pain becomes an object to struggle. Finally, Christians interpreted physical pain as a rite of passage that people could participate in heavenly joy and divine beatitude. Medieval mystics believed that pain destroyed their profane world and led them to the stages of transcendence of their selves and world. As well as the understanding physical pain, it would be crucial how human pain has been consumed among Christian theologies. For example, judicial system perceived pain as an indispensable tool of justice and government. Lots of films presented physical pain and amputation as an entertainment. Also, both chiropractors and popular preachers have made use of other’s pain as business. Thus, this issue will be the subsequent task of this study.
