이 논문은 한국의 과도한 대학입시 경쟁에 대한 성서적-신학적 이해를 시도하는 글이다. 이 논문 II부에서 저자는 먼저 한국의 무한 입시경쟁의 근원에 신자유주의와 국가주의라는 교육 외적 환경이 놓여있음을 주장한다. 또한 대학입시를 위한 수월성(秀越性) 경쟁은 사회의 공공선에 이바지하는 수월성이 아니라 단지 서열화를 위한 수월성 경쟁에 그쳐 일종의 제로 섬(zero sum) 게임과 같음을 지적한다. 이 경우 수월성 경쟁은 이긴 자와 진 자에게 행복과 불행의 배분을 정당화하는 도구에 불과하다는 것이다. 이런 각박한 입시 경쟁의 와중에서 한국기독교회는 비판적 성찰을 시도하여 대안을 제시하기보다는 그것을 강화하는 듯한 태도를 보인다. 입시를 위한 여러 종교들의 특별 기도회는 상당한 열기를 내뿜고 있다. 기독교회도 예외가 아니다. 오히려 자본주의적 신자유주의적 경쟁이데올로기를 강화하면서 경쟁열기를 온존시키는 데 기여하고 있다. 이 논문의 III부에서 저자는 한국교회가 경쟁의 가치와 정당성을 가르치는 데 과도하게 빈번히 사용해 온 본문들을 자세히 검토함으로써 한국교회의 경쟁주의 이데올로기에 대한 무비판적 수용에 대하여 문제제기를 한다. IV부는 경쟁주의 이데올로기를 공로주의 구원사상에 빗대어 설명함으로써 수월성 경쟁을 통한 보상과 벌 제도의 문제점을 지적한다. 이를 통해 업적지향 사회에서 의인론(義認論)의 사회비판적 함의를 살펴본다. 결론에서 저자는 경쟁의 불가피성을 인정할지라도 그 경쟁을 인간화하고 그것의 악마적 폐해를 극복하기 위한 기독교 대안 교육, 대안학교운동, 기독교적 대안 사회운동을 제시한다.
Abstract
The present essay seeks to construct a biblical-theological understanding of the excessive competition in college/university entrance exams in Korean. In Part II the author claims to trace the unlimited competition for entrance exams back to the non-educational environment of neo-liberalism and nationalism. It further indicates that the Korean society's competition for excellency does not contribute to increasing public good but only to end in a zero sum game. In this case the competition for excellency only justifies the distribution of happiness to winners and unhappiness to losers. The Korean church seems to reinforce the overheated atmosphere of competition for college/university entrance exams rather than offer an alternative by making a critical evaluation of it. All Korean religions are unified in boosting their adherents as they strive to ask their gods to bless their children taking exams for college/university. The Christian church is no exception. It rather contributes to heating the Korean society into a more competitive one by both subscribing to and strengthening the competition ideology of neo-liberalism. In Part III the author challenges the Korean church's uncritical acceptance of competition ideology by making an exegetical inquiry into several overexploited biblical passages to which the Korean church has thus appealed in order to teach the value and legitimacy of competition for excellency. Part IV critically examines the capitalistic reward-punishment system based on one's achievements and merits by placing the competition ideology in analogy with the idea of a merit-based salvation. It is a theological reflection on the social implication of the doctrine of justification in an achievement-oriented society like ours. In the concluding section the author proposes a Christian alternative eduction, school, and society that would overcome the diabolical aspect of competition while admitting to its inevitability.
