인간 역사에서 발생한 폭력 가운데 종교는 다양한 역할을 보여 왔다. 많은 경우 종교는 폭력적 행위나 전쟁을 부추기는데 사용되었다. 그러나 또 어떤 경우에는 비폭력 행위나 평화에 있어 핵심적인 역할을 담당하는 경우들도 있었다. 이에 착안하여 본 논문은 어떻게 하면 종교가 가진 평화적 가치와 그 실천이 갈등을 평화롭게 해결하는데 기여할 수 있는가를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 인도의 비폭력 사티아그라하 운동과 한반도의 평화통일 운동에 나타난 힌두교와 기독교의 영향을 비교 분석한다. 특히 본 논문은 힌두교의 중요한 경전중 하나인 바가바드 기타에 대한 간디의 해석, 그리고 기독교의 경전인 성서에 대한 88선언 작성자들의 해석을 비교하는데 그 초점을 두고 있다. 간디와 88선언 작성자들은 자신의 컨텍스트에서 경전을 해석한다는 유사점을 가지고 있다. 종교의 경전을 평화의 실천 속에 해석하면서, 이들은 모두 경전이 가진 문자적 의미를 넘어 그 평화의 정신에 집중하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 이들의 경전해석은 평화관에 있어서도 상당한 유사점을 보인다. 이들에게 평화란 한 개인이 자신의 삶과 재산을 보호하려는 이기적 욕망에서 나오는 것이 아니라 갈등 현실을 넘어선 진리 추구를 통해 성취될 수 있는 것이다. 마지막으로 간디와 88선언 작성자들은 자신의 종교에서 발견한 평화의 가치를 확산시키면서 갈등 상황에서 평화 프로세스를 시작하는데 공헌할 수 있었다. 그러나 사티아그라하 운동과 평화통일 운동의 경험을 통해 이들은 또한 장기화된 갈등 속에 있는 사회의 평화 프로세스는 매우 지속적인 헌신과 시간을 필요로 한다는 중요한 교훈을 가르쳐 준다.
Abstract
The role of the religion has been various in human history of violent conflict. In many cases, religion encouraged violent actions and war, but in other cases, religion played the central role in non-violent actions and peace. This paper tries to understand the value of peace in religions and its practice in the peaceful conflict resolution. In doing so, it compares Hinduism with Christianity reflected in the practice of Indian non-violent Satyagraha movement and Korean Peace and Reunification movement. Especially, it pays attention to the Gandhi’s peaceful interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most important scriptures of Hinduism, and on the 88 Declaration’s peaceful interpretation of the Bible, the scripture of Christianity. Gandhi and the writers of the 88 Declaration have a similarity in the way they interpret their scriptures in their own context. By interpreting the sources in the practice of peace, both focus on the spirit of peace in the scripture rather than a literal sense of it. Another similarity shown in them was their views on peace. For them, peace does not arise out of a cowardly desire to preserve one’s life and property, but out of truth beyond the reality of conflict. Lastly, both Gandhi and the writers of the 88 Declaration were able to contribute to initiating the peace process by spreading the value of peace which they found in religions, but their experiences in the Satyagraha movement and Peace and Reunification movement give us the important lesson that it takes time and a constant commitment to achieve peace in the societies affected by the protracted conflicts.
