Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine God’s special way of guiding the people of Israel, whom God chose to communicate with. It draws attention to the fact that Israel was a multicultural society. In particular, the God of free mobility is at the core of a theology that integrates and leads the multicultural society of Israel. In this article, I analyze this God of mobility with reference to tabernacle and the temple construction. The Tent of Meeting, which is the origin of Solomon’s Temple, was a moving sanctuary for immigrants. There were two traditions of the Tent of Meeting in the Bible; the inner tent tradition and the outer tent tradition. When building the temple in Jerusalem, Solomon installed winged cherubim, which symbolized this movement. In addition, he put carved patterns of cherubim on the temple walls, doors, and even on the ten bases of the temple court. After King Solomon built the temple, he made a prayer toward the altar rather than the Holy of Holies. He emphasized not the God of the Holy of Holies in the temple but the God who moved freely. Yet in the time of King Ahaz and King Hezekiah, we find that the Holy of Holies has become the center of theology rather than the altar. And this phenomenon of centralization around the temple in Jerusalem continued to accelerate after them. And a message of hope appeared in the period of the captivity when the ark of God was seen moving freely on wheels.
