Abstract
The present essay critically examines the long-standing Christian creed of Creatio ex Nihilo. The central thesis of the present essay is that the traditional creed of Creatio ex Nihilo as it is understood by the Church cannot be justified on biblical grounds. It argues that this creed can be made relevant to the faith and practice of the Church only if the “nothing” is redefined such as “the preexisting forces or chaotic waters that inundate the land.” This creed if understood this way could enrich our understanding of God’s creation especially with regard to the cosmic mission of human beings to push the chaotic waters back into their original place (tĕhôm) set by God by imitating God’s original fiat. The present article presents three reasons for this thesis. First, Genesis 1 which has been long reputed to legitimize the Creatio ex Nihilo belief cannot support the creed, because Genesis 1 shows that God’s creation in Genesis 1 starts from something already existing, tohu wabohu. Secondly, several other creation texts show God creating the world by fighting the chaotic waters such Ps 74:12-17 and Isa 51:9-10. Thirdly, while the present creed serves only to emphasize the divine omnipotence of God and his solitary creation, it pays no attention to those creation texts which highlight the cosmic position of human beings as co-creator positioned by God, whose paramount mission was to keep the chaotic waters at bay. It is argued that God’s creation in the Hebrew Bible is not a one-shot closed activity but an ongoing activity. To undergird the thesis, the present essay has made an exegetical inquiry into Genesis 1 and other creation texts and also reexamined the exegetical discussions of four OT scholars who have claimed to find this creed in Genesis 1and two theologians who followed these four OT interpreters. This essay has concluded that the Creation ex Nihilo creed was based not on the Old Testament and should be redefined so as to enrich our understanding of the cosmic role of human beings in sustaining the creation order of God.
