본 소론은 갈라디아서 5장을 토대로 이 편지의 윤리적 전망을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 바울은 행위를 통한 구원을 부정하지만, 그 때문에 자신의 복음이 크리스천의 윤리적인 하향 평준화를 야기한다는 비판에도 응대할 필요가 있었다. 주석가들은 소위 ‘사랑의 계명’(갈 5:14, 16) 에서 갈라디아서의 윤리적 가르침을 찾고자 하지만, 그 계명 자체는 아직 적극적인 선행의 요구로 해석되기 어렵다. 크리스천의 사랑은 스스로의 결단에 따른 행위가 아니라 ― 처음 ‘믿음’이 그러했듯이 ― 성령의 역사로 가능하게 되는 것이다. 윤리가 구원이라는 관점에서 인간의 행동에 구속력을 부여하는 한, 또 다른 율법의 의무로 이해될 소지가 있기 때문이다(참조 6:2). 크리스천은 더 이상 율법의 노예가 아니라 하나님의 자녀로서 성령의 인도를 받는다(5:17). 따라서 윤리적 삶 역시 성령이 맺은‘열매’이며, ‘미덕목록’의 첫 번째 자리에 ‘사랑’이 위치하는 것도 우연이 아니다(5:22). 이른바 이웃을 사랑하는 명령은 의무로 지킬 율법이 아니라, 오직 성령과 동행할 때 자연적으로 나타나는 미덕이다. 반면 율법은 이런 열매를 맺지 못하는 것을 넘어, 여러 악덕으로 귀결될 뿐이다(5:19- 21). 이는 율법 자체가 악하거나 악한 행실을 가르쳐서가 아니라, 육신의 본질적인 성격을 율법이 극복할 수 없기 때문에 초래된 결과이다(5:18). 요컨대 갈라디아서는 바울의 복음으로 인해 발생할 수 있는 윤리적인 하향 평준화를 정교하게 선제하고자 했다. 좀 더 구체적인 윤리적 지침은 로마서에 이르러 명확하게 제시된다(참조 롬 3:31; 6:19; 8:8-10).
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the ethical principles incorporated in Galatians. Paul is aware of attack against his gospel that this has led the Christians he is associated with to a self-indulgent life stemming from an understanding of what he preached regarding the justification of sinners regardless of the sins they had committed (cf. Rom 8:3). The commandment of love (Gal 5:14,16) is embodied in a new framework such as the ‘law of Christ’ (6:2) and can be understood as another obligation for staying in salvation. For Paul, converted Christians are no longer slaves under the Law, but God’s children under the Spirit’s guidance (5:17). Their behavior as Christians might not seem to differ from the works of Law, but it unmistakably the fruit that the Spirit bears. On the other hand, those who are still under the Law cannot help committing vices contrary to what the Law teaches (5:19-21). Of course, this does not mean that the Law itself is evil; rather, the weak nature of human flesh is responsible for not fulfilling the Law (5:18). To sum up, Paul tries to prevent the Galatian Christians from misunderstanding that his Gospel could justify ethical degradation and he introduces them to an ideal model of Christian life.
