제네바 컨시스토리의 권한과 한계 ― ‘성찬 토큰’의 기원과 배경을 중심으로

프랑스어로 ‘메로’(méreau 또는 marreaux)로 알려진 성찬 토큰(Communion Token)은 16~19세기 개혁교회에서 회중이 성찬에 참여할 수 있도록 목회자와 장로들이 각 교구의 성도에게 나눠주던 작은 동전을 말한다. 성찬은 성도의 경건 생활에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있었기에 목사와 장로들은 성도의 삶을 검열하여, 불량한 행실이 의심되는 사람들은 회개나 해명을 통해 성찬 참여 허가를 받아야 했다. 성인 남녀는 성찬 2주 전 교리 교육에 참석해야 했으며, 교육 후 장로들은 성찬 참여 허가를 의미하는 ‘메로’(méreau)라는 토큰을 나눠주었다. 성찬식에서 참여자는이 ‘메로’를 제시하고 성찬에 참여할 수 있었다. 성찬 토큰은 1561년경에 프랑스 개혁교회에서 처음 사용되기 시작했으며, 1800년대 후반까지 프랑스, 네덜란드, 독일의 개혁교회, 스코틀랜드, 캐나다, 호주, 미국의 장로교회 등에서 오랫동안 사용되었다. 그런데 16~19세기 개혁교회 대부분의 성찬식에서 사용하던 성찬 토큰을 정작 칼뱅의 종교개혁 도시였던 제네바와 스위스 개혁교회에서는 사용하지 않았다. 그렇다면 대부분의 개혁교회 성찬식에서 사용했던 성찬 토큰을 왜 제네바와 스위스 개혁교회에서는 사용하지 않았을까? 이는 ‘권징과 출교’에 대한 스위스와 제네바 컨시스토리의 권한 문제와 관련되어 있었다. 제네바에서 성찬 토큰이 거부된 배경은 신학적 차이라기보다는 권징과 출교에 대해 외국인 목사들의 권한이 강화되는 것에 대한 반감이라고 볼 수 있다. 제네바의 일부 시민들은 외부에서 온 성직자들, 특히 칼뱅이 주도하는 컨시스토리가 자신들의 생활에 과도하게 개입하는 것을 불편해하며 반발했다. 이들은 컨시스토리의 규율이 지나치게 엄격하고, 외국인의 통제가 제네바의 자주성을 침해한다고 느꼈다. 무엇보다 컨시스토리가 목회자들의 권위를 지나치게 강조하고 사회적 갈등을 일으킬 때, 시민들은 그것이 도시의 질서를 유지하기보다는 불필요한 긴장을 초래한다고 생각했다. 그런 의미에서 칼뱅의 컨시스토리는 제네바 사회에 종교적 규율을 확립하는 데 중요한 역할을 했지만, 그 권한은 제네바 시민들의 저항과 반발로 인해 완전히 행사되지 못했다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 컨시스토리가 가진 권한의 현실적인 한계를 드러냈다고 볼 수 있으며, 외부에서 온 목회자들의 개입과 시민들의 자율성 사이의 긴장을 반영하는 결과로 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
Communion tokens, known in French as méreau or marreaux, were small coins distributed by pastors and elders to parish members in Reformed churches from the 16th through 19th centuries. These tokens enabled the congregation to participate in the sacraments. Communion tokens were first used in the French Reformed Church around 1561 and remained in use in Reformed churches in France, the Netherlands, and Germany until the late 1800s, as well as in Presbyterian churches in Scotland, Canada, Australia, and the United States. However, communion tokens were not used in the Reformed churches of Geneva and Switzerland, the cities at the heart of Calvin’s Reformation. The reason communion tokens were used in most Reformed communions from the 16th through the 19th centuries relates to the authority of the Swiss and Geneva Consistory over censure and excommunication. The rejection of communion tokens in Geneva was not so much a theological difference as a reaction to the increased power of foreign pastors over censure and excommunication. Some citizens of Geneva were uncomfortable with the excessive intervention in their lives by clergy from outside the city, particularly the Calvinist-led Consistory. They felt that the Consistory’s discipline was too strict and that foreign control infringed on Geneva’s autonomy. Moreover, when the Consistory overemphasized the authority of the pastors and caused social conflict, citizens felt it created unnecessary tension rather than maintaining order in the city. In this sense, Calvin’s Consistory played an important role in establishing religious discipline in Geneva, but its authority was never fully exercised due to resistance and backlash from the Genevans. This situation reveals the practical limits of the Consistory’s authority and reflects the tension between the intervention of outside pastors and the autonomy of the citizens.
