칼빈주의가 제네바의 변혁에 미친 영향에 관한 고찰

본 논문은 스위스 제네바(Geneva)에서 쟝 깔뱅(Jean Calvin)의 주도하에 일어났던 교회개혁(Reformation)이 어떻게 그 도시 전체를 변혁(transformation)시켰는가에 고찰이다. 깔뱅은 독일의 루터(Martin Luther)와 스위스 취리히(Zürich)의 츠빙글리(Huldrych Zwingli)에 이어 대표적인 2세대 개혁자로서 제네바 지역에서 다양한 사역들을 펼쳐 괄목할 만한 업적을 남겼으며 그와 함께 왔던 위그노들은 그들의 직업과 기술로 제네바의 발전에 지대한 공헌을 했다. 낭트 칙령의 폐지(1685) 이후 제네바는 다시금 프랑스 개신교도들의 피난처가 되었고 이들은 목회자, 교사, 법률가, 의사 시계제조, 은행가, 금속기술사 및 인쇄기술자들로 18세기 제네바의 산업을 부흥시키는데 공헌했다. 그 결과 제네바는 학문과 예술의 중심이 되었으며 “개신교의 로마(Protestant Rome)” 및 “언덕 위의 도시(the city set on a hill)”라는 별명까지 얻으면서 시계제조, 은행, 인쇄 및 특수 섬유염색 분야에서 국제적 명성을 얻게 되었다. 나아가 제네바는 현재 국제기구들이 가장 많이 모여 있는 글로벌 센터가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 깔뱅의 개혁 사상이 어떻게 구체적으로 개신교도들을 통해 제네바를 변혁시켰는지 그의 사역 전후를 비교하여 살펴보겠고 이와 관련하여 그가 남긴 중요한 유산은 무엇인지 고찰하겠다. 그 후 결론적으로 이러한 역사가 한국 사회에 주는 교훈이 무엇인지 도출하겠다.
Abstract
This article deals with J. Calvin’s reformation which started in Geneva and how it transformed the whole city. As the second generation of Reformation after M. Luther in Germany and H. Zwingli in Zürich, Calvin did so many remarkable ministries. In this article, an investigation is made to see how he transformed Geneva together with Protestant Christians who came to that city from France. Many French Protestant (Huguenots) refugees brought their skills and know-how to Geneva. As pastors, teachers, lawyers, doctors, printers, watchmakers, goldsmiths, textile experts or bankers, they contributed greatly to the city’s economic growth. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), Geneva once again became a safe haven for Protestants from France. They boosted the industries that Geneva became famous in the 18th century for watchmaking, banking and the manufacture of a type of printed or painted fabric. They also consolidated the city as a centre for art and science. Following the adoption of the Reformation, Geneva was then called as the “Protestant Rome” and it grew especially as the global center of international organizations as well. In conclusion, the implications of this transformation to Korean context are drawn.
