Abstract

The question if women can teach and rule in church depends upon how we understand 1 Timothy 2:11-15 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. By exegeting these verses, this article intends to contribute to the issue of women ordination. 1 Timothy 2:11-15 seem to prohibit women to teach or rule over men in church. If we understand the verses literally, there is no room for women to serve in church. This understanding, however, is incompatible with the fact women taught and took an important role in the primitive church. The latter requires to view the verses as messages especially designed for contemporary church. At that time there were women idlers, going about from house to house, saying what they should not. Forbidding women to teach or to exercise authority over a man, Paul mentions how Adam and Eve failed, It was not to appeal to the creation order, but to give an example of what was happening now in Ephesus church. It is not an imperative, but a present predicative, which means that Paul was currently forbidding women to teach or to exercise authority, rather than that prohibition is eternal regulation. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 prohibits women from speaking in church. This is incompatible with 1 Corinthians 11 where women are free to prophesy only if they wear something on their heads. Therefore, the verses can be understood as a command not to disturb worship by speaking in the congregation, or a command not to disgrace their husbands by confronting their husbands in the public. The verses can be fully understand in their situational circumstances, not to mean eternal prohibition of women to speak in church. 1 Corinthians 11:3 says “the head of a wife is her husband.” The expression is often understood as supporting the view that women are ontologically equal to men, but functionally not equal to men. However, the contemporary did not take head as loci from where thought comes. It meant a representative, rather than headship to them. 1 Corinthians 11:10 says “a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head.” Unfortunately, Korean version translated it as “a wife ought to have a symbol that she is under the authority on her head,” falsely giving an impression that women are inferior to men. The saying that an overseer must be the husband of one wife should not be interpreted by implication as meaning elder should be a male.
