Abstract
This study proposes to reconsider meaning of ‘ὅραμα’ in Acts, based on its rhetorical impact on the audience. The main interlocutors of this study are neurotheologians whose theory is based on reductive physicalism. This paper argues that the visionary experiences mentioned in Christian scriptures cannot be simply juxtaposed with the hallucinations of epilepsy or schizophrenia, based on stimulation of the same brain region. Unlike epilepsy or schizophrenia patients experience the loss of their language and logic, becoming isolated from the community, those who experience visions in Acts dismantle and expand the social standards and boundaries of existing society through their experiences, and provide an alternative opportunity for pursuing integration with others based on altruism. In the text (Acts 9, 10, 16), those who have experienced visions not only maintain their language skills and logic, but they also play a role in inviting others to expand the boundaries of the community. For this discussion, I will first critically examine how neuroscientific studies have analyzed religious mystical experiences so far. Next, I will analyze the literary usage of ‘ὅραμα’, the most frequently used word among the many words translated as “환상” in Korean within the biblical tradition. Next, I will take a socio-rhetorical approach to Acts 9, 10, and 16, which deal with the experience of ‘ὅραμα’, to reveal what cultural and social situations those who claim to have experienced ‘ὅραμα’ were in and how they contributed to the formation of a group emotion that “expands boundaries based on altruism.”
