Abstract
This paper argues that the methodological development in Korean internatioal relations studies is likely by ensuring identity of research question. Based on this hypothesis, this paper first investigates the empirical pattern on the methodology applied in the Korean Journal of International Studies during the period, 2004-2013 under analysis. I have found that the absolute majority of studies heavily rely on the single case study on domestic affairs of other countries rather international affairs. In addition, as most imminent research puzzles that are asked to be addressed by Korean scholars, I selected the balance of power and liberal peace hypotheses and analyzed them. The findings show that it is very rare to empirically examine those hypotheses on Northeast Asia. In stead, the results of the analysis to Western countries are explicitly or implicitly applied to explain Korean international phenomena. In conclusion, to witness the methodological development, it is necessary to attempt to address research questions unique for Korea, no matter how difficult those are.
