Abstract
We review recent contributions to formal theories on democratic backsliding. These theories provide micro-founded mechanisms explaining how democratic backsliding occurs. According to these theories, citizens may support incumbent politicians who subvert democracy either because (1) their strong policy preferences outweigh their intrinsic value for democracy or because (2) their lack of some politically relevant information makes them uncertain about the consequences of allowing an expansion of incumbents’ powers. The theories also show that the polarization of citizen ideology and the lack of independent and competent media may increase the likelihood of democratic backsliding. Overall, these new theoretical contributions suggest that democratic institutions are more fragile than previous research on consolidation predicted.
