Abstract

This study focuses on young Koryoin couples in Korea who have engaged in ‘co-ethnic group’ marriage and uses their stories of meeting and choosing a spouse as ethnographic data, with the main objective of identifying micro-level individual factors and structural factors beyond the individual that shape the formation of marriages. Russian-speaking Koryoin youth, who live in ethnic enclaves in some parts of Korea, engage in family-based daily life and religious practice, and are economically active in manual labor, primarily in manufacturing and construction sections. This living environment is also closely related to the opportunities for young Koryoins to meet partners and the process of choosing a spouses. Koryoin enclave spaces, religious camps of Protestant Koryoins, economic activities, and social media platforms that connect Koryoins at Korea and post-soviet nations have become the main channels for young Koryoins to meet young partners. While physical attractiveness has always been important in mate selection decisions, human capital, such as education, work experience, and Korean language proficiency, is not a significant factor in the mate selection process for young Koryoin migrants, as it does not lead to socio-economic status in Korea. On the other hand, shared Koryoin ethnicity and cultural values were important macro- level factors in the mate selection process. For the younger generation of Koryoins who live in highly segregated family units in some ethnic enclaves in Korea, the older generation's discourse of finding marital stability in shared ethnicity and culture has been a direct and indirect influence on young Koryoin co-ethnic marriage decisions both before and after migration to Korea.
