Abstract
This study analyzes the Korean television drama What is Love? (1991) through the theoretical lens of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory, focusing on intergenerational change and cultural conflict in Korean society. The drama is widely regarded as a milestone in the early Korean Wave (Hallyu), especially for its unprecedented popularity in China and other East Asian countries. By applying Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions—power distance, collectivism vs. individualism, masculinity vs. femininity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence vs. restraint—this paper explores how these cultural traits are reflected in the narrative, family structures, spatial dynamics, and gender roles within the drama. Furthermore, the study argues that What is Love? succeeded not only as a domestic hit but also as a cross-cultural cultural product that resonated with broader East Asian sensibilities, thus laying the groundwork for future transnational Korean media success.
