초록
The research examines how federal system has historically been adopted and institutionalized in Asia. After tracing the trajectories back of four formal Asian federations, we found that designing of federalism is determined by the internal dynamics of multiethnic coalition. While the institutionalization of multiethnic coalition in India and Malaysia has committed to a political decentralization, an immediate breakup of multiethnic coalition in Pakistan and Nepal has made the dominant elites hesitant to renounce their entrenched rights. After applying path dependence to this research, we also claim that longevity of multiethnic coalition is rather exogenous. It affects to the fate of federation-candidates in the world.
