한국에서 세계시민주의(cosmopolitanism)와 국가 자부심(national pride)의 관계와 그 정책적 함의

국가에 대한 자부심이 강한 사람은 세계시민주의적 인식이 부족할까? 한국에서 국가 자부심과 세계시민주의는 어떤 관계를 보일까? 무역의존도와 시장 개방성 수준이 높은 한국은 경제적 세계화뿐 아니라 최근 한류열풍으로 인한 사회문화적 세계화의 한복판에 있는 국가이다. 세계화와 국가발전의 높은 상관관계는 한국인들이 세계시민주의적 인식과 국가 자부심을 충돌하지 않는 양립 가능한 가치로 인식할 가능성을 높인다. 본 논문은 한국에서 세계시민주의적 성향을 갖는 사람들의 인구통계학적 특징을 살펴보고, 국가 자부심과 세계시민주의의 상관관계를 세계화에 따른 경제 및 문화적 지위 상승을 이룬 한국적 맥락에서 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 한국에서 세계시민주의적 시각을 갖는 사람들이 시장의 개방성이나 이민자 유입 등의 세계화 관련 정책에 대해 어떤 관점을 갖는가에 대해 분석한다. 2023년 1월 실시한 온라인 설문조사 결과를 분석한 결과, 국가 자부심이 강한 사람일수록 강한 세계시민주의적 성향을 갖고, 세계시민주의적 성향이 강할수록 세계화 정책에 대해 높은 동의를 표하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
Are people with a cosmopolitan world view less proud of their countries? Or vice versa? The relations between national identity and supranational identity have been a debatable topic among the scholars of nationalism and ethnicities. This paper seeks to find how the two seemingly mutually conflicting identities intertwine in the context of South Korea using an online survey data. It also aims to find how the cosmopolitan view impact on the preferences about globalization policies including open markets and immigration policies. The South Korean national context provides an interesting example to test the relations between cosmopolitan world view and national pride because the country has risen as one of the Asian tigers and now as the center of K-culture that is consumed enormously by global fans thanks to the open market trade and globalization overall. The result of the analysis shows that strong national pride is related to strong cosmopolitan views and people with cosmopolitan view are more likely to agree with globalization policies.
