Abstract

Amongst national intangible cultural heritage and city/do intangible cultural heritage, thispaper is a study on the people that use metal as their main material transmitting their crafts. Among them, we took a look at the current situation and value of Baekdong-yonjukjang that usesBaekdong, Yajang, which uses iron as the main material, and Yoogijang which uses Yoogi, as well asthe state of their crafts being transmitted. Yajang, who deals with iron has long lost its ancient status, and has become a repair center forfarm equipments and other tools. Baekdong, which was made with yonjuk, was once a must forKorean men, but now has become useless due to the cigarette filter and health concerns. In thecase of Yoogijang, we compared the two situations of Jumul-yoogi and Yoogijang for hot forging, and tried to diagnose how they are today. Moreover, similar to others, the future of most intangible cultural heritage are not bright. Somewere already transmitted by the owner, and many were unable to maintain their status due to alack of recipients. The knowledge of the intangible heritage has become socially marginalized anduseless, so it has not been able to find a meaning for its existence and now is on the decline. Therefore, this study examined the difference of life and technology and the difficulty oftransmitting based on the documentary autobiography of the intangible heritage, the interviews, and the exhibitions presented. They are difficult to learn, and are not written down. They are losingits value as a craft of an accumulated experience, and are ready to disappear into thin air. So,we would like to discuss some examples of the records of these being transmitted, the accuratetransmission of technology, the restoration of universal social consciousness, and the obligationof the university as an educational institution. Therefore, it is with the hope that the discussionsof this paper will raise alarms on the actual status of our intangible heritage, which may exist onlyas a documented record in just 50 years. And at the same time, we hope that it will bring someattention to the case.
