Abstract

Retailers performs diverse sales promotions to increase short-term sales. Price discount and bonus pack are commonly used as the means of price promotions. Prior research has demonstrated that consumers generally prefer a bonus pack to a price discount even when both promotions offer the equivalent economic values. Although people perceive savings from the price discount and the bonus pack, they may perceive gains from the bonus pack because they can get more surplus of the product for the same price, and they may perceive reduced losses from the price discount. If the extra amount of the product can be obtained for free, it can remove buyer’s regret and make people overestimate of the free value by minimizing the feeling of monetary sacrifice. To our best knowledge, very few studies have investigated the effect of the store environment on the preference for price discount and bonus pack despite the fact that both promotions are frequently offered in many retail stores. Therefore, this research investigates how the level of the social density affects consumers’ evaluations for the price promotion through lab experiment. The authors show that people in the retail store with low social density are more likely to prefer bonus pack to price discount, whereas, those in the retail store with high social density are more likely to prefer price discount to bonus pack. Consumers’ preferences for the price discount in the crowded store are resulted from their motivations to avoid losses instead of obtaining gains to take less risk. Therefore, they are more likely to respond to the loss-framed message as the price discount than the gain-framed message as the bonus pack. The authors provide the important managerial implications for the practitioners that they should consider the social density level in the retail store when offering price discount and bonus pack as the price promotion.
