Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of designing a convergence course composed of several basic subjects in the liberal arts curriculum. To this end, this study assumes the development of a convergence course that combines the theme of ‘evolution of human language ability’ established in the field of biological science with <Introduction to Linguistics>, a basic course in the humanities, and develops convergence educational content that can be operated in this course. Five contents were presented here: 1) Is the ability to communicate verbally exclusive to humans? 2) Is language ability innate? 3) Does human language ability continue to function? 4) Was language a result of natural or cultural selection? 5) When did language emerge? The main implications of this study can be summarized as follows. First, university convergence education can be easily implemented in the liberal arts curriculum. Second, in order to operate convergence education in the liberal arts curriculum, the university liberal arts curriculum can be organized around basic academics. Third, the development of convergence course based on basic subjects can systematize the university’s liberal arts education process and further help normalize liberal arts education.
