Abstract
This study aims to discuss the concept and methodology of occupational Korean and translation education for international students. The purpose and goals of education should not only guide the direction of learning but also serve as a roadmap for students’ future lives after completing their education. “Occupational Korean Education” should inherently enhance students’ ability to perform job-related tasks. In this regard, incorporating “occupational translation education” into “occupational Korean education” is a natural progression. Translation is an essential skill that all second-language learners ultimately aspire to master. However, in actual Korean language education, there has been little in-depth discussion on how translation should be conceptualized and pedagogically utilized. Discussions on “occupational translation education,” in particular, have been even scarcer. Therefore, this paper explores the approaches to “occupational Korean education” and “occupational translation education” through actual classes conducted for Japanese-speaking learners. Based on the linguistic and socio-cultural characteristics of learners, this study presents criteria and examples for developing educational materials and task designs for “occupational Korean education.” Additionally, for “occupational translation education,” it proposes guidelines for selecting source texts and structuring lessons in consideration of learners’ characteristics.
