Abstract
In this paper, I propose that the image of water in the Old Testament is closely related to the Spirit. Although water image in the Old Testament is associated with various themes or motifs, such as life or salvation, judgment, chaos, the Spirit, eschatological temple, human words or wisdom, purification, and living water, this study focuses on the case that water is used as an image of the Spirit. For this claim, I offer three grounds. First, Old Testament writers often use the language of “pouring out” in describing God’s giving of the Spirit (Joel 2:28-29; Isa 32:15; 44:3-4). Second, water and the Spirit are sometimes mentioned together in the Old Testament (Ezek 36:25-27; Isa 44:3-4). Finally, in the writings of the prophets (Ezek 36:25; Zech 12:10-13:2; Isa 4:4), water and the Spirit perform two identical functions: cleansing sin and removing idols.
