Abstract

The purpose of this study to explore the Holy Spirit in the book of Isaiah. Although this focuses on a specific theme of the Holy Spirit, it does not merely present some proof texts to verify systematic theological beliefs, but also notes in a biblical theological way how the Old Testament term “ruach”is used in the book of Isaiah. On the other hand, however, this study does not follow a historical critical approach that examines the process of how the concept of the Holy Spirit develops in the history of Israel’s religions or Old Testament beliefs. The examines the texts of Isaiah in which “ruach” appears and which have some theological and canonical significance in relation with the New Testament understanding of the Holy Spirit. The term ruach basically means the flow of air, and according to traditional classification, it appears in the Old Testament as three areas: ruach of nature, ruach of man, ruach of God. In Isaiah, ruach appears 8 times as the wind of nature and 14 times meaning human breath or mind. Ruach of God appears 29 times, and this last use relates to the discussion of the Holy Spirit. The ruach of God appears in three ways. First, there are 6 occasions, in which God’s ruach(6 times) physically affects nature and man, like na-tu3ral winds, in the context of creation or judgment. The New Testament also often expresses the Holy Spirit as the wind, so we can say such understanding of the Holy Spirit is based on the Old Testament usage of expressing the Spirit of God as the wind. Second, the term is used fifteen times as the ruach of God working within man, and its uses are again classified as negative and positive. God’s ruach makes a person fall asleep or blinds judgment. This is a negative influence on the inner side of human beings, so that God’s judgment is fulfilled. In Isaiah, there are more cases in which ruach of God brings positive results to man. God’s ruach teaches judges and leaders to make right judgments. This activity of ruach is like the ministry of the Holy Spirit giving gifts to the believers in the New Testament. In addition, in Isaiah, God’s ruach appears to have a decisive influence on the work of the Messiah. The New Testament describes the ministry of Jesus Christ and emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit, citing or suggesting that the Messianic prophecies in Isaiah were fulfilled. Therefore, Isaiah’s words of God’s Ruah working with the Messiah must be understood as prophecies of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Third, there are eight occasions when God’s ruach appears as an extension of God’s existence or as a divine agent equivalent to him. In this case, the Spirit of God is portrayed as the Lord of creation, as a personal entity or an independent reality distinct from God. In conclusion, the activity of God’s ruach in Isaiah is consistent with the work of the Holy Spirit revealed in the New Testament. Especially in Isaiah, the prophecy of God’s ruach and the Messiah ministry provides the basis for the activities of the New Testament Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
