Abstract
This paper examines the textual meaning of the expression "Abraham does not know us" in Isaiah 63:16. Much of the previous scholarship on Isaiah 63:16 is dominated by diachronic approaches. They have viewed Isaiah 63:16 in terms of how the Jewish community in the exilic or post-exilic period understood and embraced the Abrahamic tradition or how they rejected or undermined the Abrahamic tradition and developed a new theological understanding of God's fatherhood to fit their historical and social context. However, this dichotomous framework of affirmation and rejection, continuity and discontinuity of the Abrahamic tradition presented by the diachronic approach tends to overlook the ethical dimension of Isaiah 63:16 in the context of the entire book of Isaiah. This study seeks to examine the meaning of Isaiah 63:16 in light of its direct literary context, 63:7-64:11[12], as well as Isaiah 1-5 and Genesis 18:19, which have been neglected by previous studies. From this effort, we can summarize the meaning of "Abraham does not know us" as follows: First, it implies the sinfulness of the people of Israel, which lacks justice and righteousness. Abraham does not recognize or would not acknowledge present Israel as his descendants, which has failed to build the community of justice and righteousness as expected of Abraham's descendants in Genesis 18:19 and has become like Sodom and Gomorrah. Second, it serves to emphasize God's fatherhood by negatively referring to the nation's relationship with Abraham, their most important ancestor.
