Abstract
This paper deals with the inner-biblical interpretation of the book of Daniel. Daniel 10 utilizes the book of Ezekiel exegetically. Daniel strategically draws on the vision of the glory of the Lord in Ezekiel 1-3 as he describes a mysterious celestial being whom he encounters in a vision. The identity of this being is not angel Gabriel. When Daniel conveys his visionary experience through a literary analogy to Ezekiel's vision, the heavenly revealer of Daniel 10 is revealed to be inferior to the glory of YHWH on the throne in Ezekiel 1, but superior to the cherubim who serve that divine Glory. It is implied, then, that the heavenly revealer of Daniel 10 is an intermediate being who surpasses Gabriel or Michael but is ontologically situated between God and the angels. This mysterious celestial being, who transforms Daniel into a powerful interpreter of God's end-time revelation, looks back, on the one hand, to the One like a “son of the gods” who fully protects the three faithful Jewish youths in the midst of Nebuchadnezzar's snares in Daniel 3 (3:25), and, on the other, to the eschatological wise teachers who lead the covenant people from temptation and persecution by the king of the north to glorious resurrection in Daniel 11-12 (11:33, 35; 12:3).
