Abstract
Understanding the spatial organization of Baekje's late royal fortresses requires a comparative analysis of Gongsanseong Fortress, the royal fortress of the Ungjin period, and Busosanseong Fortress, the royal fortress of the Sabi period. However, archaeological investigations of these sites have taken different approaches: research on Gongsanseong Fortress has focused primarily on its internal space, whereas investigations of Busosanseong Fortress have been centered on its fortification walls. This discrepancy has made direct comparisons between the two fortresses challenging. Recently, large-scale excavations of the internal space of Busosanseong Fortress have provided new insights. Based on the findings, the internal space of the fortress can be categorized into seven distinct zones: Zone Ⅰ: Core space within the fortress (presumed royal palace site), Zone Ⅱ: Auxiliary and storage space, Zone Ⅲ: Ritual space, Zone Ⅳ: Auxiliary space (later period) + entrance and defense space, Zone Ⅴ: Storage and support space, Zone Ⅵ: Concentrated storage space + entrance and defense space, Zone Ⅶ: Auxiliary space and water collection/storage space + entrance and defense space A preliminary comparative analysis of the architectural features and spatial organization of Gongsanseong Fortress and Busosanseong Fortress suggests that the building sites within Gongsanseong Fortress correspond to the lower-layer (Cultural Layer 1) structures in Busosanseong Fortress. Furthermore, despite some variations, the overall spatial arrangement of both fortresses appears to follow a nearly identical pattern, indicating continuity in Baekje’s royal fortress planning.
