Abstract
Coding education is increasingly mandatory for non-majors in Korean universities, yet studies on effective programs and tools for these learners remain limited. This study developed a hybrid program combining textbased and block-based coding tools and applied it to 38 first-year education students. The aim was to evaluate learning outcomes and explore tool preferences. Results showed significant improvement across four domains—coding comprehension, problem-solving ability, learning motivation, and self-efficacy—between pre- and post-tests. After the program, 28.9% of students preferred text-based tools, citing professionalism and practical applicability, while 71.1% favored block-based tools for their ease of use, accessibility, engagement, and educational value. These findings indicate that integrating text-based and block-based tools can enhance coding education for non-majors, improving both cognitive and affective outcomes. Moreover, learners’ preferences highlight the importance of tool choice in designing effective curricula, particularly in colleges of education.
