Abstract
This study comprehensively analyzed the factors related to understanding others’ emotions in deaf students from the special education teachers’ perspective and explored strategies for improvement. The type of self-identity developed by deaf students significantly affects their ability to understand and empathize with others, while residual hearing and linguistic expression skills are directly linked to interpersonal relationships, academic performance, and overall social adaptation. Additionally, a lack of diverse environmental experiences and disparities in communication skills negatively influence peer interactions. Overprotective parenting, negative perceptions of sign language, and insufficient societal awareness were identified as critical barriers limiting students’ emotional understanding and self-acceptance. The absence of appropriate teaching methods, such as bilingual-bicultural education, the lack of deaf education specialists, and insufficient sign language proficiency among teachers further hinder the emotional growth and academic achievement of these students. Therefore, promoting identity formation, providing diverse experiences, improving family and societal awareness, strengthening educational systems, and offering positive role models are essential to foster emotional development and social adaptation in deaf students. This integrated approach will contribute to enabling deaf students to lead emotionally enriched lives and successfully adapt to society.
