Abstract

Many have witnessed the frequent representations of North Koreans in South Korean popular culture especially film and TV dramas. Given the ideological confrontation between the two South Korean popular culture has long featured North Korean characters whose portrayals have shifted with geopolitical change and the globalization of media industries. From the 1953 armistice through the mid-1990s, North Koreans were depicted primarily as monolithic enemies. Following the end of the Cold War and the onset of inter Korean rapprochement, depictions diversified to include the “poor neighbor” and members of a shared ethnicity. Commercially oriented films and television dramas mobilized sympathetic and nationalist frames–rooted in the long-lasting “division system”- to maximize domestic appeal. With the rise of global streaming and other over the top(OTT) platforms, producers recalibrated for transnational audiences, representing North Koreans as socially marginal and precarious subjects, echoing mainstream images of defectors. At the same time, both the division and North Korean characters are commodified as markers of “Koreanness,” offering belonging for local viewers and novelty for global ones. These tendencies are increasingly gendered: North Korean women are often symbolized through precarity, whereas North Korean men are idealized as bearers of “authentic” masculinity perceived to be threatened in neoliberal South Korea. Neither regime of representation captures the complexity of North Korean lives; taken together, they show how OTT-era efforts to brand K-culture operate through the othering of North Korea. Drawing on textual and historical context analysis of South Korean films, the article argues that “North Korea” functions as a flexible sign within South Korean popular culture, shaped by shifting ideological contexts and the political economy of media.
