Abstract
This study examines the experiences of elite students from Central Asia majoring in science and engineering in A university, which is located in outskirt of a provincial city and teaches in English, as well as the meanings attached to study in Korea. It reveals the meaning of study in Korea as a relatively possible but limited space for global education through ‘discrepant mobility.’ This study expands the scope of understanding of global education beyond the global class mobility/reproduction project by the privileged. Rather it shows that individual global project sometimes overlaps with the nationalistic motivation for economic development. Students gave positive meanings to the high quality education as well as the cultural experience of studying with diverse international students in English. However, this study also shows the constraints - their physical and linguistic isolation led to isolated experiences in Korea, cut from the local culture and society.
