Abstract

This article examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the vulnerability of international students in Korea. Informed by the theoretical concepts of disaster linguicism and language ideologies, the study explores how the pandemic affects those students, and how the students have access to the disaster information and respond to the challenges entailed by the pandemic. A thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data collected from a total of 10 international students. The findings suggest that international students had limited access to the COVID-19 disaster information primarily due to multiple forms of linguicism embedded in the institutionalized inequalities of social structure. The students’vulnerabilities were more compounded by the internalized oppression stemmed from the ideological workings of the dominance. Both language brokering and translanguaging were employed as the coping strategies out of the students’agency to tackle the challenges posed by the pandemic.
