Abstract
This study aims to provide a basis for establishing policies tailored to the characteristics of multicultural adolescents by empirically analyzing various factors that influence the development of self-esteem and gender differences in these adolescents in Korea. Using data from waves 1 through 5 of the Multicultural Youth Panel Survey, I estimated a series of growth curve model. The findings unveiled several key insights. First, self-esteem in multicultural adolescents showed a consistent increase from ages 10 to 14. Second, factors like social support, proficiency in the Korean language, and body satisfaction were positively associated with self-esteem, even after adjusting for individual differences and maturation. In contrast, perceived discrimination was linked to decreased selfesteem. Third, male adolescents exhibited a more pronounced rise in self-esteem compared to their female counterparts. These insights carry policy implications. Addressing discrimination experienced by multicultural youth is paramount. Implementing multicultural sensitivity training for community members could be beneficial. Also, given that many multicultural female adolescents view their mothers, many of whom are migrant women, as role models, we must work to eliminate discrimination and expand opportunities for migrant women.
