Abstract
This study examined the effects of loneliness on smartphone dependence among Chinese adolescents and the moderating role of social support. Two research questions were addressed: (1) How does loneliness affect smartphone dependence? (2) Does social support moderate this relationship? A survey was conducted with 586 middle and high school students in China, and 584 valid responses were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and PROCESS Macro. Results showed that loneliness had a significant positive effect on smartphone dependence, and social support moderated this relationship. Unexpectedly, higher levels of social support strengthened the effect of loneliness on smartphone dependence. This suggests that social support does not always serve as a protective factor; in certain contexts, unmet emotional expectations may increase negative outcomes. The findings highlight the need to consider not only the quantitative expansion but also the qualitative improvement of social support in interventions to reduce adolescent smartphone dependence.
