초록
In this study, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/high density polyethylene/aluminum hydroxide(EVA/HDPE/ATH) flame retardant composites were prepared by electron beam irradiation. EVA andHDPE were used as matrix resins, and ATH was used as an eco-friendly halogen-free flame retardant. The prepared EVA/HDPE/ATH composites were characterized in terms of their gel contents, mechanicaland thermal properties, and flame retardancy according to ATH content and electron beam irradiationconditions. As a result, the limiting oxygen index of the composites increased with an increasing contentof ATH, while the mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and elongation-at-break, were reducedsignificantly. After electron beam irradiation, the gel content, tensile strength, and elongation-at-breakremarkably increased with an increasing absorbed dose to 50 kGy due to the formation of crosslinkednetwork structures, and then levelled off. The thermal stability of the composites improved with anincreasing absorbed dose. The limiting oxygen index was not significantly changed with an increasingabsorbed dose. These results indicate that electron beam irradiation can improve the mechanical andthermal properties of the composites without significant effect on the flame retardancy.
