Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine how much Ancient Near Eastern religious thought was reflected in the document “the Crimes of Nabû-šuma-iškun,” written in the Seleucid period, by analyzing religious offenses written in the document. This document consist of four columns in which there are eight passages concerning religious offenses. According to the analysis of the mentioned religious offenses of the “the Crimes of Nabû-šuma-iškun,” these crimes can be categorized the following four ways: the acts of ignoring divine will; the acts against divine hierarchies; offenses against religious taboo, especially concerning etiquette toward the gods; and theft of god’s possessions. These crimes were traditionally considered religious offenses in the concept of Ancient Near Eastern Religion. Thus, even if this document is written in the Seleucid period, the document reflected the Ancient Near Eastern religious worldview.
