Abstract
Background: It is important to appropriately discuss and balance parental expectations and personal desires when making career decisions. However, women tend to prioritize the acceptance of others over their own achievements when it comes to career choices. While the ability of female students to be considerate and attuned to the emotions of others can be a strength, it may also lead to a tendency to focus more on maintaining relationships with others than on personal accomplishments. Purpose: This study will examine the relationship dynamics of female high school students and explore their connection to career choices in depth. The findings will serve as foundational data for identifying ways to leverage women's relationship-oriented tendencies as a strength in career decisions. Methodology: The participants consisted of three students who agreed to be interviewed from a group of 14 participants in the “Relationship Enhancement through Group Counseling – Understanding Oneself and Others” program, which was held at a female high school in the Seoul area. The interviews were conducted twice. The research method employed was qualitative case study. Finding: A total of four categories and eleven subcategories were established. Category 1 is “Focusing on oneself rather than getting caught up in evaluation,” Category 2 is “Confronting One’s Relationship Style,” Category 3 is “Exploring the Desired Changes in One’s Relationship Style,” and Category 4 is “Connecting the Identified Relationship Patterns to Career Choices.” Conclusions: First, through focusing, learning and applying a non-critical attitude towards one's concerns helped in safely engaging with negative emotions. Second, through the focusing exercises, it became easier to confront relationship and career concerns that were previously hard to face or avoided. Third, by reflecting on one's interpersonal skills, it was possible to identify strengths that could be utilized in career choices.
