Abstract
This study empirically examined the development of learners’ core competencies through a project-based media art course utilizingdigital tools such as After Effects and MadMapper. The participants were 25 undergraduate students majoring in multimediadesign at a four-year university in the Seoul metropolitan area. Over a 15-week semester, both quantitative and qualitative data werecollected and analyzed using a convergent mixed-methods design. The instruments consisted of a nine-item Likert-scale questionnaireand 13 open-ended self-reflection prompts. Quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation, reliability, and factor analysis, while qualitative data were coded and validated through inductive categorization and expert review. Thefindings indicated that learners enhanced their competencies through autonomous problem definition and resolution, strategic appli-cation of digital tools, and collaborative role fulfillment and communication. Quantitative results showed that all three competencieswere rated above 4.0 on a 5-point scale, with a strong correlation (r = .838) between creative problem-solving and expressive-appliedskills. Qualitative analysis further revealed that students expanded their creativity and expressive capacity beyond mere technicalproficiency, engaging in proactive exploration, cultural reinterpretation, and visual practice. These results suggest that project-basedmedia art education can function as an integrated learning structure that simultaneously strengthens creative problem-solving, expressiveapplication, and collaborative communication competencies. The study also highlights the need for teacher capacity buildingand institutional support in curriculum design to ensure sustainable digital-based creative education.
