위희(魏禧)와 조선후기 한문학 - 서유구의 사례를 중심으로 -

Abstract

This writing is the first comprehensive study on corelation between Weixi (魏禧, 1624~1681), one of the three great writers of the early Qing period (淸初三大家), and late Choseon literature written in classical Chinese. In the following chapter, first of all, an outlook on references and materials including the collection of Weixi’s writings, anthology, and series will be treated. On the basis of it, which aspect of Weixi attracted the intellectuals in the late Choseon will be examined. The appraisals of intellectuals in the late Choseon on Weixi are broadly divided into two. One is about Weixi as a displaced person at the late Ming period. Those intellectuals mostly considered Weixi as a displaced person who lost country at the end of Ming, who adhered to his loyalty toward Ming dynasty. This standpoint naturally resulted in favorable attitude toward Weixi’s literary world. Weixi’s such reputation seemed to be associated with ‘daemyeong-euri-ron’ (the discourse of loyalty to the Ming dynasty). The other side of the appraisal is about Weixi as a prosaist. Weixi looked upon extensive embracement of prime literary tradition, the writer’s individuality, through endeavor of personalizing, and connection between literature and society as important, and his view of literature seemed to have something in common with the trend of literary world in the late Choseon. In the conclusion, following issues will be covered: Which of Weixi’s writings did intellectuals in the late Choseon pay attention the most? How did they personalize Weixi’s writings? As a representative case, Seo Yoogu (徐有榘, 1764~1845) will be discussed. Seo was a prose writer as well as a Silhak scholar (scholar of the Realist School of Confucianism) who had integrative thoughts about ‘aesthetic value’ and ‘practial value’. His literary and academic tendency seemed to affect accepting Weixi’s literatures. In this sense, it can be concluded that Seo received Weixi’s significant outputs, digest them and in the end, personalized them.
