Abstract
This study analyzed Korean data from the OECD’s PIAAC Cycle 2 for adults aged 45–65. Cognitive (literacy, numeracy, adaptive problem solving) and socioemotional (agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, extraversion, openness) competencies were standardized and used to estimate latent profiles; correlates were examined with multinomial logistic regression within a life-course perspective. Six profiles were identified based on within-profile balance between cognitive and socio-emotional domains and the relative level of cognitive competencies across profiles: (1) Imbalanced Multiply Disadvantaged, (2) Imbalanced Underachievers, (3) Below-Average Asymmetrical Performers, (4) Balanced Average Performers, (5) Balanced Mid-High Performers, and (6) Asymmetrical Top Performers. Membership in higher-level profiles was more likely among adults who were younger, more educated, recently engaged in lifelong learning, and frequently acquired new job-related skills. By contrast, lower education, poorer health, immigrant background, non-participation in lifelong learning, and routine/repetitive tasks predicted membership in lower-level profiles. These findings highlighted heterogeneity in midlife competencies as cumulative products of age, schooling, learning continuity, and work context—supporting a life-course perspective. The study recommends profile-tailored policies: re-skilling and expanded higher-education pathways for vulnerable groups, and advanced upskilling plus knowledge-diffusion roles for upper-tier groups in order to sustain engagement and strengthen national human capital.
