초록

이 논문에서 나는 우선 서양 근대의 철학적 개인에 관한 지배적인 서사(특히 하이데거에서 유래한 서사)를 살펴보면서 그것이 지닌 맹점과 역설을 검토해볼 것이다. 그 다음 이러한 서사에서 빠져 있는 정치적 개인에 관한 또 다른 쟁점들을 ‘소유적 개인주의’ 라는 해석틀에 입각하여 검토해볼 것이다. 이러한 검토는 근대의 정치적 개인이 함축하는 양가성을 보여줄 것이다. 세 번째로 알튀세르와 푸코가 각각 나름대로 제시한 바 있는 예속적 주체화의 문제를 살펴볼 것이다. 예속적 주체화라는 개념은 근대의 철학적 주체 및 정치적 주체에 관한 서사들을 전도하여, 자율적 주체로서의 개인들이 사실은 지배관계의 재생산 메커니즘 속에서 예속적으로 생산되고 재생산된다는 점을 보여준다는 점에서 서양의 철학적 근대성과 정치적 근대성에 대한 강력한 도전이다. 관계론적 자율성이론은 탈근대 사회 또는 신자유주의 사회로 특징지어질 수 있는 오늘날의 시대에 주권적 개인성 이론에 대해 한 가지 대안이 될 수 있다는 것이 이 글의 마지막 결론이다

Abstract

In this paper, I will first look at the dominant narratives of philosophical discourse on the individual in the modern Western philosophy (especially one derived from Heidegger), and examine its blind spots and paradoxes. Then I will review other issues concerning individuals as political subjects that are missing from these narratives on the basis of an interpretative framework of ‘possessive individualism’ which will demonstrate the ambivalence of modern political subjects. Third, we will look at the problem of assujettissement (subjectification), which Althusser and Foucault have suggested in their own ways. The concept of assujettissement is a strong challenge to Western philosophical and political modernity in that it overturns modern philosophical and political narratives, showing that individuals as autonomous entities are in fact subjugated and reproduced in the reproduction mechanism of domination. The conclusion of this article is that the theory of relational autonomy may be one alternative to the theory of sover- eign individuality in today’s age, which can be characterized as the postmodern or neoliberal one.
