정신장애인의 회복경험에 관한 질적연구- 사회복귀시설에서의 임파워먼트 실천을 중심으로 -

초록

본 연구는 정신장애인들이 사회복귀시설에서 임파워먼트 실천을 어떻게 경험하고, 이러한 경험이 회복을 향해가는 여정에 어떤 영향과 의미들을 가지고 있는지를 정신장애인들의 시각과 관점에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 총 9명의 정신장애인을 대상으로 질적연구한 결과 16개의 주제와 49개의 하위주제, 170개의 의미단위가 분석되었다. 연구참여자들의 임파워먼트 실천은 일상에서 내가 할 수 있는 일을 하다, 신나고 재미있는 활동과 그 속에서 경험하는 다양한 의미들, 사람을 만나고 사람에게 격려받다, 삶을 꾸리는 방법 등 총 4개의 상위범주로 분석되었고, 회복경험은 병을 받아들임, 성장하는 나, 세상과 소통하기, 가족과의 관계변화, 희망을 노래하라 총 5개의 상위범주로 나타났다. 회복의 비선형적 과정은 엄습하는 두려움, 나는 정신장애인이지만 정신장애인이고 싶지 않다, 바닥으로 떨어지다, 다독이고 다시 세상 속으로, 취업과 수급의 딜레마, 별다른 신통함이 없는 곳, 여전한 낙인과 공평하지 않은 삶의 무게 등 총 7개의 상위범주가 포함되는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 중심으로 이론적, 실천적 함의를 논의하였다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how people with mental illness experienced empowerment in a rehabilitation center and how their experience had an impact on the journey toward recovery. A generic qualitative research was conducted on 9 mentally disabled people for the analysis of 16 main themes, 49 sub-themes, and 170 meaning units. The empowerment practice of the participants was analyzed in four categories: do in my daily life, enjoy various experiences, meet people and be encouraged by them, and plan my life. A journey to recovery appeared in 5 categories: accept illness, grow, communicate with society, change relationships with family, and cherish hope. The nonlinear process of recovery included 7 categories: hate to be mentally disabled, fall to the floor, return to the world, dilemma between employment and public support, be nothing special, and live an unfair life with stigma. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings were discussed.
