‘포스트’ 담론의 유령들 - 애도의 애도를 위하여

이 글은 지난 20여 년 간 국내 학계에 큰 영향을 미친 ‘포스트’ 담론을 비판적으로 평가해보려고 한다. 한국에서 포스트 담론은 크게 두 가지 관점에서 평가되어 왔다. 하나는 포스트 담론이 새로운 세계사적 변화의 현실을 표현한다는 의미에서 그것을 일종의 시대정신으로 받아들이는 관점이며, 다른 하나는 그것을 후기 자본주의의 이데올로기 내지 가상으로 받아들이는 관점이다. 하지만 필자가 보기에 미국에서 만들어지고 수입된 포스트 담론은 오히려 애도의 담론으로 기능했다. 포스트 담론은 1980년대 한국 인문사회과학의 화두였던 마르크스주의의 복원과 자생적 발전론에 입각한 민족사의 재구성이라는 과제를 청산하고 그 대신 마르크스주의에서 포스트모더니즘으로, 민중사에서 문화사로, 사회철학에서 포스트담론으로의 이행을 정당화하는 논거로 기능했다. 하지만 이는 신자유주의적 세계화가 산출하는 갈등과 모순에 대한 맹목 아래 수행된 애도 작업이었으며, 이로 인해 값비싼 대가를 치르게 되었다. 첫째, 마르크스주의 및 포스트 담론이 모두 이중적으로 무력화되었으며, 둘째, 마르크스주의 및 민족ㆍ민중 운동의 역사적 한계에 대한 고찰과 포스트 담론의 실천적 적합성을 입증하는 작업이 제대로 수행되지 못했다. 이는 포스트 담론이 제시한 세 가지 통찰에 비춰볼 때 매우 아쉬운 일이다. 포스트 담론은 첫째, 다수의 보편들 사이의 관계라는 문제를 제기했으며, 둘째, 예속화와 주체화의 관계를 핵심적인 철학적ㆍ정치적 쟁점으로 제시했다. 아울러 셋째, 노동자 계급의 본질주의와 유럽적 보편성의 한계를 넘어서기 위해 복수의 정치라는 통찰을 제시했다. 따라서 앞으로 국내의 비판이론이 마르크스주의와 포스트 담론의 분리를 극복하기 위해서는, 또는 양자가 서로 상대방을 전화시키도록 만들기 위해서는 이러한 세 가지 통찰을 구체적인 논의를 통해 발전시킬 필요가 있다. 데리다의 관점에서 말한 다면 이는 곧 애도의 애도의 과제라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
In this paper I attempt to critically reappraise the 'post' discourses which have had a huge influence on social sciences and humanities in Korea since 1990s. Most of the discussions on the 'post' discourses have taken mainly two opposite stances: on the one hand, many postmodernists accepted them as a Zeitgeist that represents the world-historic changes in reality; on the other hand, they were accused by the radical left as an ideology of the late capitalism. I think, however, they rather have played as a discourse of mourning: that is, they liquidated one of the most significant agendas for the Korean social sciences and humanities in 1980s'—the rehabilitation of Marxism and the reconstruction of the national history on the basis of a theory of immanent development—as an outdated one, and, instead of it, they raised another topic, namely, the transition from Marxism to postmodernism, from people's history to cultural history, and from social philosophy to 'post' discourses. So, this was a work of mourning, but one which was blind to the conflicts and contradictions of the New World Order. Hence, they counted the cost for their blindness: first, both Marxism and 'post' discourses were paralysed by the neoliberal globalization; second, the task of critical reflections on the historical limits of Marxism and of the national-popular mouvement was abandoned, or at least marginalized, and 'post' discourses, in separation from Marxism, were consumed mostly for the justification of the new hegemonic liberal power. This is very disappointed result, especially considering the insights we could learn from the 'post' discourses: multiplicity of the universalities, the philosophicalㆍpolitical significance of the relationship between subjection (assujettissement) and subjectivation, and, finally, the plurality of politics, which are crucial to overcome the essentialism of the working-class politics and the eurocentric universalism. It is, therefore, urgent for the critical theory to fill the gap between Marxism and 'post' discourses, or to make them to transform each other, and to develop these insights further in concrete analyses. To speak in terms of Derridean philosophy, it could be called a task of the mourning of a mourning.
