Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of anxiety and mindfulness in the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and somatic symptom. A total of 313 adults completed self-report measures, which included the Korean version of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, the Somatic Symptom Scale, the Generalized Anxiety Scale, the Mindfulness Scale. The main results are as follows. Firstly, anxiety mediated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and somatic symptom. Secondly, mindfulness moderated the relationship between anxiety and somatic symptom. Thirdly, mindfulness also moderated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and somatic symptom and manifested significant moderated mediation. The finding suggest that individuals with intolerance of uncertainty may be more likely to accept negative anxious mood, this may ultimately lead to reduce negative somatic symptoms. The implication and limitation of the study were discussed based on these results.
