종교다원주의와 디아스포라 : 한국의 다문화 사회화 전개와 디아스포라 개념의 유용성

이 글은 ‘디아스포라(diaspora)’개념이 본격적인 다문화 사회화를 겪는 우리의 다종교 상황과 종교다원주의 논의에 어떤 통찰을 주는가를 다룬다. 그간 국내의 종교다원주의 논의는 기독교 신학적 배경에서 주류 종교의 공존과 대화 위주로 이루어졌다. 또 인종과 문화의 동질성을 전제로, 치열한 현실의 요청보다 이론적 모색에 머물렀다. 그러나 무슬림 이주자를 포함해 이질성이 큰 이주민의 증가추세는 종교다원주의 논의에도 다문화 사회화가 초래한 다원성에 대한 반영을 요구한다. 이러한 새로운 담론 모색에 ‘디아스포라’ 개념은 중요한 통찰을 준다. 당초 ‘디아스포라’ 개념은 소수공동체의 폐쇄적 정체성과 관련되어 사용되었으나, 최근에는 다양한 동기의 이주를 포괄하면서, 이주자들의 다중적 정체성과 혼종성, 역동적 문화 창조 기능을 포착하는 개념으로 활용되기 때문이다. 이러한 디아스포라 개념은 종교다원주의 논의에 다음과 같은 유용성을 줄 수 있다. 첫째, 이주한 소수 공동체를 동화와 흡수의 대상이 아닌 독립적인 주체로 인식하게 함으로써, 인종적/문화적 이질성이 커진 다문화사회의 현실을 더 명료하게 파악하도록 돕는다. 둘째, 종교와 정체성의 다양한 관계에 초점을 맞추어 종교다원주의 논의를 되짚어 볼 수 있게 한다. 셋째, 이주 공동체와 주류 사회가 상호 작용을 통해 집단 정체성을 재형성해가는 역동성에 주목하게 한다. 소수 이주자와 같은 타인의 목소리를 예민하게 의식하는 ‘디아스포라’적 관점의 도입은 다문화 사회화에 수반되는 다원성을 포용하라는 현실적 요청에 학문적으로 응답하는 태도일 수 있다.
Abstract
Recent changes introduced by immigrants with different ethnic/cultural backgrounds make our society fundamentally different one. Heterogeneous population in terms of race, culture, religion resides in the same area. In particular, ‘race’ is to be considered as a new and crucial element in the discussion of religious pluralism. Meanwhile, the traditional religious pluralism in the West hit a new phase due to the enlargement of multi-culturalism. This situation requests a different approach toward the debate of religious pluralism. This paper focuses on the question of what kind of insight can be offered by the concept of 'diaspora', especially when a full-fledged multi-ethnic/multi-cultural situation comes to be realized in Korea. Originally the Greek word diaspora consists of 'dia' (over) and 'spero' (sow), which means 'litter widespread', 'diffuse', or ‘disperse’. Then the Diaspora is widely known as a concept indicating the scattered Jewish communities. In the first place, the term diaspora has strong implication of separation and isolation, however, as ethnic/cultural diversity prevails, the concept of 'Diaspora', as a concept that captures the multiple identities and dynamic creative capabilities of migrants, is more applicable than ever before. The concept helps us to stand in the position of religious minorities or ethnic groups, and makes us to understand its relationship with mainstream society more vividly. We believe that this concept enable us to capture the situation experienced by our society better, which is entering into a multi-cultural phase, and can offer significant insights to religious pluralism debate.
