본 연구에서는 폴리그래프 검사에 대한 일반적인 인식을 알아보고 현재 통용되고 있는 잘못된 인식에 대해 설명하였다. 이를 위해 경찰관과 대학생을 대상으로 폴리그래프 검사에 대한 인식을 설문조사를 통해 살펴보고 두 집단 간 인식 차이를 비교하였다. 설문조사 결과, 거짓말탐지 검사의 정확성과 신뢰성에 대해 경찰관은 검사가 정확하고 신뢰할 만하다고 인식하고 있으나 대학생은 이와는 상반된 인식을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 대학생의 경우 진실한 사람이라도 불안해하면 거짓으로 결과가 나온다고 인식하며, 수사과정에서 상대방과 진술이 다를 경우 거짓말탐지 검사를 반드시 받아야하는 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 그 외 다수의 경찰관은 거짓말탐지 검사를 거부해도 수사절차상 불이익이 없다고 인식하나 대학생의 경우 불이익을 받는 것으로 인식하였다. 끝으로 폴리그래프 검사에 대한 잘못된 인식과 오해에 대해 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study examined the perception and misunderstanding of polygraph tests. Police officers and college students were surveyed on their perception about polygraphs; then, we analyzed perceptual differences between them. Police officers believed polygraph tests were accurate and trustworthy; however, college students displayed contrasting perceptions about polygraph tests. Moreover, college students believed that higher state anxiety may affect the results (i.e., incorrectly indicating deception) and that it is necessary to examine polygraph tests when suspects’ statements are inconsistent. Incorrect perceptions about polygraph tests are discussed.
