본 연구의 목적은 상대적으로 연구가 적었던 교통법규 위반에 영향을 미치는 요인 특히, 자기통제와 기회요인이 교통법규 위반에 미치는 영향에 대하여 검증하고, 이러한 관계가 성별에 따라 차이를 보이는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 2017년에 한국형사정책연구원에서 수행한 ‘전국범죄피해조사 2016’ 자료 중 2016년 한 해 동안 운전경험이 있는 5,777명에 대한 자료를 사용하였다. 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과에 의하면 자기통제와 기회요인은 교통법규위반에 독립적인 영향을 미칠 뿐 두 요인간의 상호작용효과는 없었고, 요인들 간의 관계는 성별에 따라 차이를 보이지 않았다. 본 연구의 결과는 기회요인에 대한 Gottfredson과 Hirschi(1990, 1993)의 주장을 부분적으로 지지하는 것이며, 아울러 위법행위에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 위해서는 자기통제와 기회요인에 대한 통합의 필요성을 시사한다.
Abstract
The purposes of the current study are to examine the effects of self-control and opportunities on traffic violations and to explore whether the relationships are valid across sex. To this end we use the data of ‘Korean Victimization Survey 2016’ which were collected by the Korean Institute of Criminology in 2017. The results of the logistic regressions show that self-control and opportunity have only main effects on traffic violations, while the interaction effects of the two variables on the traffic violations are not significant. Regression analyses examining sex differences in the influences of self-control and opportunities on traffic violations provide similar relationships among the variables across males and females. The current study partially support Gottfredson and Hirschi’s arguments on the effects of self-control and opportunity on crime, and imply that criminal opportunity is to be included in self-control theory to better understand the causes of crime. In addition, the findings of the current study are consistent with the authors' arguments regarding the generalizability of the theory across sex.
