The Effects of Cultural Distance on the Translation of Cultural Elements: Focus on Korean to English and Korean to Arabic translation of movie subtitles

This paper focuses on the Arabic translation of Korean movie subtitles to understand the effects cultural distance has on the translation of cultural elements. The researcher looks into translators' problem-solving processes when translating terms of address and interjections, which are the most culturally nuanced Arabic language system. Generally, English translations are referred to to compare the two languages. However, Korean is a language with complex terms of address that reflect the social position, intimacy, era, and personality of characters. This presents a grave problem when Korean has to be translated into English or Arabic, which does not have many terms of address. Interjections in this paper also present a challenge in translation because they usually take place in spoken language that requires understanding situational contexts. Moreover, due to their cultural connotations, interjections are difficult to translate to different cultural environments. Thus, this research analyzes how translators try to solve this conundrum within audiovisual translation's time and space constraints.
