초록
From a linguistic perspective, this study investigates and studies on Korean company names concerning their meanings and word-formations, based on their structural and semantical aspect. Nowadays, dozens of Korean company names are changed and enrolled on the Korea stock market like COSDAQ, or Securities in a year, according to KTR materials on its own web(June 1, 2014), which makes it difficult to understand the meanings and word-formations of the company names. That is why those of the 129 companies among 1288 ones are chosen on a random tenth basis and studied. This study explains they are composed of a compounding style(27.8%), a derivation one(0.8%), a blending one(18.3%), a shortening one(7.1%), an initialism one(42.1%) including an initialism(alphabetism) + English style and an initialism (alphabetism) + Korean type, and an acronym one(12.4%) in a structural aspect. A Korean’s + English’s shortening(abbreviation; clipping) style is not found. In addition, a little bit of difference between company names’ and borrowings’ word formation is exposed in a blending aspect. Though English borrowings usually consist of a blending type of AB+CD→AD, AB+CD→ABD, AB+CD→ACD, and AB+CD→BD, there are an AC type such as Enertork, Optisys, Unichem, GemVax, and Chasys (but, classyfied into acronym here) and an AB+ CD→ABC type like Neuros (Neural + System’→ neuros), Raygen(Ray + generater → Raygen), and 다원Sys(다원 + system). In the semantic aspect of these blending and compounding, a semantic head is usually in the left or both the right and the left as in the case of endocentric compounds, not in exocentric compounds. Thus, this study is expected to provide future studies with a helpful material through correct understanding of English usage and recommend Korean corporations to make their names so that customers can easily figure out what type of their business they are and how to pronounce them.
