The Relationship between High School Students’ Strategy Uses and their Listening Achievement Scores

Many scholars have emphasized strategy uses in learning a second/foreign language. The present study examined 119 high school students' strategy uses and relationship between their listening achievement scores and their strategy uses. Data were collected and analyzed with respect to six kinds of listening strategies. According to the data, social strategies were used less frequently than any other strategies, but the relationship between the strategy use and listening scores was very weak (r=.23, r2=.05). On the other hand, the participants used affective strategies more frequently than any other strategies, but the strategy use showed weak correlation with listening scores and did not show any statistical significance in the case of high-level students (r=.08, ns). In other words, strategy uses did not guarantee high scores of listening comprehension. The strongest correlations were found respecting memory strategies and cognitive strategies. An implication emerges from the results: teachers should encourage their students to use the two kinds of strategies in teaching listening comprehension.
