초록

This study tries to demonstrate the potential of a corpus-based stylistics to help analyze, interpret, and reveal the characteristics of literary texts, especially in terms of styles. Recently corpus linguistic analysis has been widely used to study non-literary data and has proved its usefulness, but it has hardly ever been tried in literary areas. In order to illustrate the literary value of simple quantitative text and estimate the effectiveness of corpus stylistic analyses, this study attempted a corpus-based stylistic analysis of J. D. Salinger's 「A Catcher in the Rye」. To elicit the novel's stylistic attributes, Mark Twain's 「The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn」was chosen as a reference corpus or a norm. For this research, WordSmith Tools 6.0, a corpus analysis program, was used. Keywords were drawn from the computer program's quantitative comparison between the two novels. A keyword is considered to be a style-marker, which identifies certain stylistic associations. The results showed that the frequency of 'I' is much higher in 「A Catcher in the Rye」 than in 「The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn」. It is a noticeably important distinction in that both of the two novels share the same form of a first-person narrator and hero, suggesting that this novel might put more emphasis on the problems of the hero than those of his society or his outside world. Other keywords, mostly slangs and profanity, repeatedly reflect the defectiveness of Holden, the hero and narrator of the novel. The frequently used bombastic keywords, such as 'really,' 'even,' and 'very,' lead readers to find out how inconsistent and arbitrary Holden's narratives are. This shows that the writer probably entrusts a reader with the right to judge where Holden's serious conflicts and sufferings actually come from, Holden himself or his outside. Thus, this keyword analysis indicates that 「A Catcher in the Rye」 is more careful and efficient in selecting and commanding individual words as well as phraseology. Holden's idiosyncratic speech repeatedly reveals his peculiar psychological conditions and gradually identifies his characteristics. From this standpoint a corpus-based stylistic study can concludingly be evaluated as a useful method at least in reading literary texts of some works, like 「A Catcher in the Rye」, in which language has a close relationship with a subject.
